  • 160 bank employees, customers and well-wishers at high street bank, Barclays, have raised a staggering 40,000 for The South Devon Disabled Sports Association charity to help support two-and-a-half Archie Barton and his family after he was struck down by meningitis at just 18 months old.

This is the latest in a host of fundraisers organised across the city to help care for Archie, who had to have his legs, parts of his fingers, some of one ear and the tip of his nose removed.

The 'wacky' Barclays bankers from across South Devon completed a sponsored relay between 18 branches by various modes of transport, including a fire engine, police car, tractor, plane, roller skates, and scooter before completing a mass sponsored walk.

Andy Beazley, area director for Barclays Retail, in Plymouth said; "We were so moved by Archie's story we wanted to raise as much money as possible to support a local charity which in turn will benefit families like Archie's. Every pound donated by our customers, friends and families has been matched funded by Barclays."

The money raised will go towards supplying prosthetic legs which could cost upwards of 25,000 each year as Archie grows and some of the money will also be used for anything he needs to improve his quality of life.

Herald Article, Jan 2009Archie's Mum Nicky Barton said: "My family can't say a big enough thank you; this will make a massive difference to Archie's future. We are extremely grateful by the overwhelming support and generosity shown by local people." See Herald Article
  • From Michaela Arrowsmith, Archie's Tissue Viability Nurse in intensive care:
The reason I put the study day on was realizing that children's nurses have no training in wound care and are directed by the doctors. This is sometimes not appropriate and modern wound healing methods can reduce scarring and patient discomfort. I thought it was time they were introduced to Archie by way of a podcast and they learned up to date ways of wound healing. The day was the first of its kind and it brought 60 children's nurses from all over the South West and each one are keen to have another one yearly. It raised 1000 for Archie's Fund as I always wanted to give something to help out for his future. He will however always have my love and admiration (and his family) which will last forever.
    Thank you, Michaela!
